I had a year of piano in 5th grade and know how to read music but I was thinking piano lessons once a week with practice and getting the classes that don’t require an instrument first
you must know–
all maj & min scales
all chords thru 13th chords
all modes
all chord scales
do you realize how long it will take to know these concepts??

What I would do is find a great instructor and possibly work out of the Mark Levine books.. (think that’s how you spell his last name). If your really interested in playing, practice is no big deal. I practiced for 5 hrs. a day when younger and have friends who practiced longer. Good luck..

check this out, i’ve been playing for 12 years, and the way that i practice is playing all of my scales, chords, and modes at least once a day. not that hard to learn them all, the order as you probably know is whole step, whole step, half step, whole step\, whole step, whole step, half step. you can do that for any key, and i suggest that you go to a website for all of your modes, because i can’t remember all of them off the top of my head, but you can find them somewhere i’m sure. you should also know if you’re just sight reading or don’t really feel like doing any work right then, that almost all jazz piano scores have the chords written in, and unless you have a solo, you don’t really have to read anything, just know the chords. Also, it’s kind of ok to play flat fingered in jazz music, cause it’s got that relaxed feeling to it. The way that i practice my triads is doing one huge apeggio up the scales, so i play 5-3-1 in my left hand, and then i play 1-3-5 in my right hand moving them in half steps until i get to high c or the c above that, that seemed to help me a lot in the earlier years. Oh yeah, easy trick for a 13 chord, play like, all of the notes in the scale through the sixth scale degree, unless it’s a seven chord, where you play all of them. Just make sure that you spread it out correctly so it doesn’t sound so dissonant (even though we both know it is, no one else has to know). When you do sight read though, play the chords as 1-5 in your left hand, and 3-7-or-8 in your right to spread out the sound. So i mean, it shouldn’t take you any longer than like 2 or 3 months tops, playing piano isn’t really all that hard when you’re into music and work hard. it’s uber easy and stupid fun. Depends on natural talent, desire, existing ability – some people take lessons for years but never get better and they stay at the same level.
