Wait for your lessons. The first thing your teacher should impress upon you is the importance of proper hand and finger positioning–that’s something you cannot expect to learn on your own. You don’t want to go in with bad habits that the teacher will need to correct–let him/her guide you to doing it the right way the first time.

Adding, if you are a teacher you should not teach your child. If you are not a teacher you should not teach your child.

With a teacher, at age six, I started out with the Bartok Mikrocosmos and the Schirmer collection called Beginner’s Bach, not long after adding Schumann: Kinderszcenen.

I personally find a lot of the other collections, John Thompson, etc, so generally filled with banal music I am astonished more children aren’t completely turned off to music at the beginning because of these books.

Try to get a teacher at least for the beginning…

I also introduce composition to young students by having them pick out 4 notes to start with. I start writing those 4 notes down on manuscript paper, asking them questions along the way to help them understand my thought process in figuring out where to draw the notes. If needed we might do 4 more notes during the lesson until they are understanding it, and then I assign them to write down 4 more notes at home. During the next lesson, I have them play their composition and check over what they wrote down, correcting it together if necessary.

Another fun activity I do with really early beginners who are not to the point of doing the previous composition exercise is take index cards and write a letter on each one. (we might start with just C, D, E, and F to make it simpler) then I shuffle the cards and the student gets to lay the cards out on the piano in whatever order they choose. When they are arranged, they have made a song and they play it to see how their song sounds. This helps them practice finding different notes while feeling like they have control over the activity.

I am a music producer and this is why I want to take up a few instruments. This wont be for a hobbie but something I see myself doing in the future like a job. It’s just really confusing when I see one pianist playing faster and more complicated pieces of music than another I automatically think it would be better to go with that pianist not realising the styles of music could be totally different. I don’t know what makes a good pianist.

I am not sure what qualifications I should look for in them. I want to learn how to read music and play the piano fluently so I can implement it all into the music I currently produce.

I feel that from the very start you should try to maintain the same teacher as only with time will the teacher know your weaknesses and bad habits while playing the piano and will also know what are your strong points and what is your style.

You should get yourself a teacher that is definitely very experienced in music. Of course, the teacher must be able to play musically and must know how to sight read well. He must also be able to correct your mistakes accurately and give very constructive criticism and be able to explain to you in deep detail but with you being able to understand.
