So I’m wanting to get him a keyboard at Christmas, but I dunno if it’s suitable. Is it good for him to learn on keyboard or would it be too different from learning piano?

If you are on a budget, it is a good idea to start on a keyboard as they are much cheaper!

It depends on the person, but no matter what, it’ll take you a long time unless you are highly gifted.
However, you will learn a lot faster if you have a good teacher. i recommend getting a piano teacher, a highly regarded one. If you have a bad teacher, or a mediocre teacher, you won’t learn as quickly. If you are determined to be self taught it will take you a lot longer.
I started piano at 14. I took lessons from an amazing teacher and I’m "fluent" (like the term used that way!) enough in music to major in piano in college (I’m 18 now) However, I’ve been reading music since the fourth grade, which helped. When I first started piano, I only practiced for a half hour five days a week, now, I’m obviously years behind (most piano majors have been playing since elementary school), so I have to work hard and play an hour and a half every day. Eventually i’ll try to get it to the point where I can practice two hours, maybe even three hours a day without hurting my hands.
Just remember, though, there are different levels of playing and different levels of reading and technique, too. Just develop what you want, be it technique, reading ability, or musicianship- there are many areas in which to judge an instrumentalist. Completely mastering piano takes a lifetime, because you can always learn from it. Best wishes and good luck to you.

I heard some say that our brain stop developing at a certain age(12?) So it would be alot harder now if i didn’t start learning at a really young age.

I always wanted to play piano really. . . but I guess I was a bit to lazy and wasn’t really motivated enough. Now I sort of regret it back then.

While it’s harder to learn piano at a later age, it’s not impossible. I’m 19 and I started taking piano in college for credit. The only previous experience I had for reading notes came from a computer program called "Music Ace" that I had to complete in two years at my high school. I learned to read notes exceptionally well in high school and because of that, piano came a little easier at first. Now I’m learning things about diminished and augmented chord qualities and it’s a little harder now.

If you can keep at it and practice at least 20 minutes every day, you can learn piano. You might not be as proficient at someone that’s been playing since childhood, but you’ll still become a very decent player at the end of your lessons.

If you cannot afford a private teacher, then take a CLASS – but being on your own will prove slow and frustrating. "Play the piano" covers as lot of territory – if you want to pluck out simple things, then you can probably teach yourself, and unless you have truly horrible posture and alignment, do it without injuring yourself – although bad fingerings and the over-repetition that comes with self-teaching will lead to injuries such as carpal tunnel or thoracic outlet syndromes. The smallest touch or correction that a teacher gives you, that you think NOTHING of, is often the difference between progress and pain. Even in a class, a good teacher will spot this, or give overview statements about proper ergonomics, learning skills, etc.

The person who said the even professionals never learn sightreading completely, is WAAAY off the mark. The topic of my Masters Thesis at Boston University in 1978 was sightreading, and I have maintained current status on this topic, as has my husband. It is a learned skill – it is NOT just getting faster as "OMG!! Look at all those notes! YIKES!!!" Once you learn how to sight-read effectively, ALL or your problem-solving skills get better in life, too. We teach this for pianists, orchestral and band players, and SINGERS – the hardest, since they must audiate ( hear it in their head before they play. If you have heard guitarists who *sing* all the notes as they improvise – you can tell it is in their head first, fingers second.)

The book s designed for instruction as just that – designed to be used by a qualified teacher. You cannot teach yourself form those, even if you go thru each song, turning a page a day. When I was teaching in schools (1971 to 2008) when I gave a pre-printed theory assignment, I would white out the directions on the master sheet, so that they HAD to listen to me give the directions. Other wise, you pass out something for homework, and the FIRST kids tries to finish half of it before the last kid gets theirs – and since they are NOT listening to you – it is wrong.

I found yesterday a question in Performing Arts, where I am the Leader, about teaching yourself voice through videos, etc. Since I taught vocal music all those years in school, I read it – and based on responses I have given BEFORE about this, one responder used this as a vehicle for a particularly nasty and profane ad hominem attack on me. Of course, I responded, in a polite and well-informed manner. But my convictions remain the same. ANY guidance from a qualified teacher is better than none – perhaps you can take a few *get started* lessons, work on your own, and then call in for consults later. I know that this is not cheap – we have taught private lessons since 1973, and a school year of lessons ( ot counting the summer) is over a grand for most HS students. However, the parent TELL us – as do the kids – that they SEE results – state assessments, placements in top performing groups, ability to SAIL through those works that were once considered Mt. Everest. PLEASE consdier calling a teacher for only the BRIEFEST of time, if only for THEM to choose what books will do you the most good! Asking the person in the music store means you are talking to not much better than some gum-chewing HS kid in a rock band – HARDLY an instructional expert.

it took me about a year. however, i was already able to read music for guitar, cello, bass guitar, string bass (believe it or not those two are actually different just because of where you place your hands, the notes are technically the same but you tend to play them in different places), and voice. if you keep at it, you could probably get it in 6 months or so, but a year would be a good bet if you practice alot. this is to be fluent, technically i knew which note was which after like 2 weeks, but i wouldn’t be able to look at a simple piece and just play it. i would need to think about it, try a few times, and practice. chord charts are great, so you can just follow chord changes, but i really respect what youre doing. i didnt start piano till i was 16 and i regretted not starting earlier, so it takes massive cajones for anyone to start this late, and props to you boy. or girl. i actually teach keyboard lessons now (rock and pop music only, little bit of hip hop, obviously i cant teach classical on piano if ive only been playing 2 years), so email me for any questions

Don’t suggest "all cows eat grass" because that’t not how to learn it, that’s a way of remembering. Any tips for like flashcards, so that when asked I can automatically know the names.

you have to remember it before you can learn it, so……. all cows really do eat grass.

don’t be so damn inpatient. this is alot harder instrument to learn than the flute and i’m sure you didn’t learn all the positions above and below the staff on the treble clef in a week, did you?

no you didn’t….i didn’t and i’m a prodigy who plays 7 instruments at 1st chair level.

take a breath, relax and slow down. it’s going to take awhile and repitition before you can learn them so that you can call them out on sight. nd for that, you have to start at all cows eat grass.

the you go to all brown cows don’t eat fried grass after balloons crossing deeply eternal fields ect ect…..whatever you can figure out…..until you learn them…..

lol….thats A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F from bottom of the bass clef to way up above the staff……

you have to pick something that works for you, remember it, then over time you will learn it…..as you spend more time with it you come to learn what each position above or below the staff is just as you did with the treble clef….there is no easy fix and no substitute for time in the seat, as it were…..
